Ghosts of Thailand 1
Ghosts of Thailand 1: A Haunting Glimpse into Thai Beliefs.
Thailand is known worldwide for its beautiful beaches, spicy food, and warm hospitality.
But beyond the sunshine and smiles lies a fascinating world of ancient beliefs, especially when it comes to ghosts.
Thai people have a deep-rooted respect—and fear—for spirits, and ghost stories are an important part of our culture and everyday life.
In Thai, the word for ghost is “ผี” (Pee or Phi). We believe that spirits live all around us—some are good, and some are dangerous.
Ghost stories are passed down from generation to generation, and many are inspired by real places or events.
One of the most famous Thai ghosts is Mae Nak Phra Khanong, a woman who died during childbirth but continued to live with her husband’s ghost.
Her story is so well known that a shrine was built in her honor in Bangkok. Another well-known ghost is Krasue, a floating female head with glowing entrails that feeds on raw meat at night.
And don’t forget Phi Tai Hong, the restless spirits of people who died suddenly or tragically—they are believed to be the most powerful and frightening of all.

Thai people often make offerings to spirits, especially when building a new house or starting a business.
Spirit houses are placed outside buildings to keep ghosts happy and protect the living.
We also have many ghost festivals and horror movies that reflect our beliefs, blending tradition with modern entertainment.
So, while Thailand may be a paradise for travelers, remember—it’s also a land where the spiritual world walks alongside the living.
If you come to visit, be respectful… You never know who—or what—might be watching.
